Unschooling resources I’m loving

March 20, 2022

A friend recently asked me what homeschooling/unschooling resources I like. Not necessarily things to plan our days, or instructions about how to do it, but things that inspire me, change my perspective or really shake things up.

I love sharing resources. Many of my favourite things that I’ve read or watched (you know, the ones that have a big impact on your life?) have come to me as recommendations from friends. So let’s share the love!

My Favourite Unschooling Resources

Today my favourite resources are 3 humans who are unschooling parents. These folks inspire me, break down overwhelming challenges into do-able bits, and do it with flair and fun!

1. Issy from THe ‘Life Without School’ Podcast

Issy blogs and podcasts about his family’s journey. I’m really loving his relatively new podcast: The Life Without School. Issy is honest, not preachy, and backs his opinions up with research and experience. Wondering what unschooling is, how to talk to concerned grandparents, or how to guide your learners instead of teach? He explores all of that and more. I find it so practical and inspiring!

2. Lucy Aitken Read

Lucy is a straight-talking, unschooling parent who writes the blog Lulastic and the Hippyshake. Her Instagram posts are inspiring, and her YouTube videos are funny and helpful. She also teaches an unschooling support workshop-training that I’d like to try.

3. Leah McDermott

Leah McDermott created Your Natural Learner, a blog and curriculum that supports children to learn on their own natural timeline and within the natural world. We occasionally use the curriculum, but mostly I love how she guides me through ways of observing my kids as learners. It’s helping me understand their learning styles, to really see them and help guide them through.

Her Instagram is also just super motivational, for me, someone who was very schooled and has some de-schooling to do. Lastly, I bought her year’s worth of morning invitations for $12 and found them to be a life saver. When we’re in a rut or just need an idea for a simple, open-ended activity – Boom, there’s one for every day of the year!

What’s inspiring you lately on your home learning journey?
